A Legacy of Justice: Celebrating the Incomparable Justice Olukayode Ariwoola at 70

Today, August 22nd, 2024, marks a significant milestone in the life of a champion of justice, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, as he celebrates his 70th birthday and retirement as the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Born on August 22nd, 1954, Justice Ariwoola’s journey to the pinnacle of Nigeria’s judiciary was marked by dedication, integrity, and a commitment to justice. Appointed to the bench of the Supreme Court of Nigeria on November 22nd, 2011, he has left an indelible mark on the country’s legal landscape.

On July 27th, 2022, Justice Ariwoola was appointed Chief Justice of Nigeria, and his tenure was confirmed by the Senate on September 21st, 2022.

Baba Justice Olukayode Ariwoola has been blessed by the Almighty God, leaving honourably at the end of his tenure as prescribed by the constitution.

During his time in office, he restored stability to the court and upheld the constitution. With his skillful application of wisdom, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola navigated the country through numerous crises, including the Naira redesign, election tribunals, and local government autonomy.

In a landmark ruling, he declared that Nigeria’s sovereignty resides with its citizens, and that elected officials and judiciary are mere custodians, holding it in trust for the benefit of all.
