Press Release: Oyo Civic Groups Reject Rotational Chairmanship Bill for State Council of Obas
A Call to Preserve Yoruba Heritage and Traditional Authority

Oyo, Nigeria – May 21, 2025 – We, the undersigned federation of Oyo-based civic groups, united to promote our collective interests, express deep concern over the Oyo State House of Assembly’s proposed bill to rotate the chairmanship of the State Council of Obas and Chiefs among the Alaafin of Oyo, the Olubadan of Ibadan, and the Soun of Ogbomoso. While we respect the House’s constitutional role in lawmaking, this proposal raises significant cultural, historical, and spiritual concerns that require urgent reflection.

Alaafin Abimbola Akeem Owoade

The Alaafin’s Historical Significance

The Alaafin of Oyo is a sacred institution, symbolizing the legacy of the Great Oyo Empire, a globally recognized hallmark of Yoruba civilization before colonialism. For centuries, the Alaafin’s throne has unified Yorubaland, fostering loyalty and uplifting other traditional seats. Cities like Ibadan and Ogbomoso share deep historical ties with Oyo through shared ancestry and service to the Alaafin, both during the Empire and in modern times.

Concerns Over the Rotational Chairmanship

An earlier proposal for a concurrent chairmanship, with the Alaafin as permanent presiding officer, acknowledged this historical precedence. The shift to a rotational model, however, departs from established traditions, risking the erosion of the Alaafin’s revered role in Yoruba sociopolitical structure. We are troubled by sentiments in some quarters that appear to challenge the Alaafin’s significance, despite the historical bonds uniting Oyo, Ibadan, and Ogbomoso.

Preserving Yoruba Heritage

Yoruba unity depends on respect for our shared heritage. Altering time-honored structures through political motives or local rivalries could sow division and undermine our cultural integrity. We urge the Oyo State House of Assembly to reconsider this bill and engage in broad consultations with cultural custodians to ensure decisions honor our collective legacy.

Appeal to Governor Makinde

We call on His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, to lend his leadership to preserve the delicate balance of Yoruba traditions. By listening to stakeholders and cultural leaders, the Governor can safeguard our heritage while fostering unity across Oyo State.

A Call for Unity

The strength of the Yoruba nation lies in our respect for the legacy that binds us. We appeal to all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and ensure that our traditional institutions remain pillars of unity and pride.

Key Concerns

  • Historical Role: The Alaafin represents the grandeur of the Oyo Empire and Yoruba civilization.
  • Cultural Integrity: Changes to traditional structures must avoid political or divisive motives.
  • Heritage Preservation: The House must reconsider the bill to maintain Yoruba unity.
