The Imperial Majesty, Oba Engr. Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, emphasized that effective security is vital for national development, economic growth, and democratic stability, highlighting the importance of strategic security measures to protect citizens. He shared these insights during a courtesy visit by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) for Zone 11, Mr. Emubo Fred Ekokotu, at his palace today.

The Imperial Majesty advocated for leveraging native intelligence to bolster national security, citing the Old Oyo Empire’s 600-year stability due to its robust internal security framework. He underscored the pivotal role of traditional rulers in crime prevention, utilizing their local knowledge, influence, and community structures to foster safety. “Traditional rulers serve as mediators, enforce customary law, and act as bridges between law enforcement and communities,” he said.

The Paramount Ruler explained that traditional leaders can mobilize communities for crime prevention, support community policing, and use local insights to identify crime trends and hotspots. As the first point of contact for dispute resolution in his kingdom, The Imperial Majesty noted that his interventions prevent minor conflicts from escalating into serious crimes. By applying customary law and traditional adjudication, he promotes social harmony and deters criminal behavior. He also facilitates compliance with formal laws by acting as an intermediary between police and residents.

Furthermore, The Imperial Majesty highlighted that traditional rulers’ deep understanding of local dynamics enables them to address root causes of crime, such as poverty or social unrest, in collaboration with community members.

The Imperial Majesty praised the Inspector General of Police and the Oyo State Commissioner of Police for their unwavering commitment to combating crime. “Criminal activities in Oyo town and its environs have significantly declined due to the diligent efforts of police officers. My people report no misconduct by the police, who have remained responsible and dedicated,” he stated.

Earlier, AIG Ekokotu sought The Imperial Majesty’s support for intelligence gathering to enhance security, as part of his visit to formations under his command and to congratulate the monarch on his coronation. Stressing the value of community policing, he urged residents to provide timely and accurate information to security agencies, acknowledging the critical role of local communities in maintaining law and order.

The Imperial Majesty assured the AIG of his cooperation, pledging to foster effective community policing in his domain to ensure a safer environment.
