The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Engineer Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has emphasized that Yoruba religion relies on oral traditions, beliefs, and practices passed down through generations. He noted that a structured hierarchy of rulers, functioning in both religious and political capacities, holds the authority to interpret events and uphold ethical and moral standards.
Oba Owoade made these remarks during the grand finale of the ancient Yoruba bullroarer (Oro festival) held at the Palace in Oyo town.
He explained, “In traditional Yoruba belief, all power in the universe originates from Olodumare, the supreme being known as the source of everlasting abundance, among other praise names. Olodumare, a genderless entity, is the origin of all existence, encompassing both supernatural and natural realms.”

The Alaafin highlighted the resilience of Yoruba culture and civilization, which have withstood foreign cultural domination despite interactions with Europeans. He stressed, “The Yoruba possess a rich cultural heritage that has significantly contributed to national development. We must protect the foundation of our identity and preserve the essence of our existence as a people.”
Oba Owoade further underscored the Yoruba’s commitment to a society governed by law and order. Unlike modern trends, Yoruba culture instills values of sanity and morality in children from an early age. Through oral traditions, young Yoruba learn etiquette and ethical principles as they grow.
Expressing concern over the erosion of Yoruba customs due to modernization, the Alaafin warned against allowing traditions to fade into obscurity amid growing permissiveness. He urged vigilance to safeguard Yoruba heritage.
Commending the Oro elders and youths for their dedication to the revival of Yoruba traditions, Oba Owoade reaffirmed his commitment as the Custodian of Yoruba customs to tirelessly uphold the cultural and traditional values of the Yoruba people.
The event concluded with prayers for peace, progress, and prosperity for Oyo town, the state, and Nigeria, as well as for the Alaafin’s long life, good health, and divine wisdom to fulfill his responsibilities on the throne.
